According to a recent Aberdeen Group report,“Executive Dashboards:The Key to Unlocking Double Digit Profit Growth,”respondents were able to achieve an average
24 percent year-over-year increase in operating profit through the use of dashboard
technologies.
Dashboards,which resemble an auto’s instrument panel and appear on a user’s
computer screen,quickly convey risk management data on costs,profit,revenue,or
cash flow.
“These tools have expanded in scope to help operational managers understand
changes in inventory levels,supply chain efficiency,human resources metrics,and a wide variety of other business factors,” says Michael Lock,research analyst for business intelligence at Aberdeen Group.
For example,organizations surveyed by Aberdeen were able to produce an average
8.4 percent improvement in sales performance,more than four times the increase
of all other companies,by leveraging a comprehensive and pervasive strategy for
dashboard use.

In-House Diagnostics is a mobile diagnostics provider based in Michigan that employs a workforce of 190 and provides more than 145,000 diagnostic studies annually.
“Rising labor costs and legislation associated with Medicare/Medicaid issues
have a major impact on our business,” says Michael Kaszubski,CFO.“We are constantly monitoring our cost structure to maximize efficiencies.”
“This year,we set our expense budget at 2009 levels while incorporating an overall
volume increase of 3 percent,” he says.
Using Dashboard as a Tool
The company,taking a proactive approach,implemented a real-time dashboard monitoring system that reduced its variable labor costs by nearly 7 percent,while increasing volume by 3 percent and cash flow by 28 percent.
The price tag for the initial dashboard implementation,including direct and indirect costs,was $19,000.“The system interfaces with our existing general ledger,radiology imaging,revenue management,and database systems,” says Kaszubski.The company’s decision support staff developed the dashboard internally.“Our
department head was responsible for the development of the metrics/dashboards
and the interface with all of In-House Diagnostics’existing systems,” says Kaszubski.“However,the success of the project was grounded in a team approach incorporating members from revenue,accounting,operations,senior management,and staff level employees.”
